With so much natural beauty, the Southern Forests have some of the most amazing trails for you to explore, no matter what your mode of transport. Hiking, mountain biking, road cycling, canoe, kayak or even horseback: We have it all. With much of the region being classed as State Forest or National Park, there are enough trails here to get your fix and yet still have more to explore!

1. MUNDA BIDDI TRAIL

Meaning “path through the forest” in Indigenous language, the Munda Biddi is a world-class off-road cycling experience over 1000 kilometres in length from Mundaring to Albany. The local part of the trail winds along a natural corridor right across the Southern Forests region, passing through towns along the way. You need not complete the whole trail: the gentle terrain is perfect for an hour’s ride, a full day adventure or an overnight odyssey. Grab your map and get out there!

2. BIBBULMUN TRACK

One of the world’s greatest long distance walk trails, the Bibbulmun Track criss-crosses the Southern Forests. Walkers are lead through the various types of forests, mist–shrouded valleys, over giant granite boulders and along coastal heathlands. Stay in town or at one of the dedicated camp huts along the way.

Walk and wonder

There are endless opportunities year round to meander along lush green river banks and between tall trees. Depending on where you go, the scenery can change from dense forests, to ocean cliffs or grassy plains. In late winter the rivers and waterfalls are at their peak. In spring the wildflowers bring colour and excitement to the undergrowth. You can explore the history and heritage of our towns on one of several easy walk pathways and trails. For more information, visit us at the Manjimup Visitor Centre.

3. KARRI FOREST EXPLORER

If you prefer the comforts of your car, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! The Karri Forest Explorer is a self-guided drive, taking in the best of the National Parks surrounding Pemberton. Forests give way to heathland and granite outcrops on the way to Point D’Entrecasteaux. Following the main roads takes you past scenery that constantly changes

4. PADDLE THE WATERS

The mighty Blackwood, Donnelly, Warren, Shannon and Frankland Rivers make their way through the valleys and forest, ultimately to the ocean via the many estuaries. Rivers, inlets and dams provide a tranquil way to enjoy the sights and sounds as you glide silently along in your stand up paddle board, canoe or kayak. Hire stand up paddle boards at the Pemberton General Store, which also hires mountain bikes if you would like to take advantage of the mountain bike trails.

Winter rains mean there are rapids on offer for adrenaline junkies. Make sure you check weather reports and connect with local information from Parks and Wildlife or canoeing groups to get the latest updates on conditions. Your safety is your responsibility.
